My First Time with Jay Reatard...... III/V

By King Khan

Within a few seconds he collapsed into a foetal position screaming his head off. He had emptied a can of Easy off oven cleaner on to his junk. Could you just imagine the facial reaction of the doctor that had to examine him later, finding this 16 year old naked boy covered in motor oil with the first two layers of skin off his penis burnt off? It really felt like I had found a lost twin, two exhibitionist punk kids who loved to fuck shit up and get fucked up.

He told me he went night swimming with some buddies and this girl whom he couldn’t stand but who used to follow him around like a puppy. When they got to the “lake” he got butt naked and jumped in. When he came out he was covered in shit, he had jumped into a cess pool. The first thing he did was go up to the girl and sit right next to her and put his arm around her.

In the wee hours of the morning Jay wanted to sneak into Alicja’s room to show me something. We were giggling like little kids and he went straight to a little night table next to her bed. He pulled out this cherry cola flavored body gel that Hustler magazine had just put out. He poured some into my hand and told me to rub it it on my wrist. I did and my wrist got hot. We giggled some more and he told me about how when he was a kid he used to take a can of Pam to school and huff it with girls “cuz it made your privates hot”. It was funny cuz I had never met Alicja before and it felt like we snuck into Jay’s big sister’s room.

So what’s next? “Wanna watch a UV porno?” Ofcourse!!!!!

lied zum sonntag: smell of incense

"Every song in this album has been written, arranged, sung and played by the group. No one censored us. We got to say everything we wanted to say,
in the way we wanted to say it."

Up to 11

8MMMUSIK teams up with Anton Newcombe to present 11 exclusive tracks by 11 bands that helped define the last 10 years of 8MM and Berlin's Underground rock'n'roll scene.

The 8MM Bar was founded by Alex "Olli" Konuk and Louis Trumpbour in 2002 and quickly developed a reputation as a meeting place for musicians from all over the world. 8MM Musik, the music label, was founded to nurture a niche music scene in Berlin, taking advantage of 8MM's growing international reputation to promote German, and particularly Berlin based bands internationally. Case in point, this record is being released worldwide in cooperation with Anton Newcombe's UK based 'a' Recordings. The label's "8MM Musik Night" serves as a platform to present exceptional original music from both Berlin and abroad, live, on a not-for-profit, all-money-to-the-artist principle. This is 8MM Musik's second compilation, including Camera, Kadavar, Jack November, The Third Sound, The Blue Angel Lounge, Snøffeltøffs, Sun And The Wolf, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Mystical Communication Service, Suns Of Thyme, and Fredovitch & His One Man Band feat. Kitchenmen.

As a result of their penchant for spontaneous performances, whether in the streets or sneaking in on official events, Camera have been entitled "Krautrock-Guerilla". Taking up the mantle of cosmic music and its legacy, the German trio have caught the attention of Michael Rother and Dieter Moebius who hence have supported the band on stage. Camera performed at an 8MM Musik Night in 2011.

Sabbath and Pentagram comparisons aside, few bands have done more in the past 2 years to put Berlin's original rock scene on the map than Kadavar. 8MM Bar's barkeeper Christoph 'Lupus' Lindemann continues practicing his voodoo with his three-bearded band, which has just released their second album: ABRA KADAVAR, the follow up to their powerful and perpetually sold-out 2012 self-titled debut, whose record release party was held at an 8MM Musik Night. Lindemann designed the artwork for this record.

Jack November is the project of 23-year old artist Daniela Moos, who signed to 8MM Musik in 2012. Shortly thereafter, the singer-songwriter released her self-titled debut EP. Even before that, by word of mouth of her talent alone, she earned opening slots for Beach House and Soap&Skin. Characterized by a captivating angelic voice portraying enigmatic landscapes where light and shadow seem to merge, Jack November contributes a cover of Nirvana to the compilation.

Former Singapore Sling guitarist Hákon Aðalsteinsson, moved to Berlin from Iceland in 2010 and took up residence at 8MM, regularly DJing for the next 2 years, all the while developing the live incarnation of his own project, The Third Sound. The first album was released in 2011 by Anton Newcombe's 'a' Recordings. The hypnotic post-punk influenced textures of 'For A While' intensify our anticipation for their forthcoming 2nd LP, "Destruction and Creation".

Since 2009 the connection between The Blue Angel Lounge and 8MM Musik has gone far beyond that of a conventional band-label relationship. The BAL has come to represent what 8MM Musik stands for, and conversely Blue Angel Lounges international success is unthinkable without the support of 8MM. The Hagen based band began as 6 piece psychedelic outfit in 2006. With their second LP "Narcotica" (8MM Musik, 2010), they began subtly introducing post-punk elements to their melodic songwriting, and the intensity of Nils O's vocal began to come to the forefront. The band have supported The Brian Jonestown Massacre across America, and the Dandy Warhols in Europe, and have a carved out a niche for themselves in record collections all over the world. Perhaps not surprisingly, they remain largely overlooked at home in Germany. 'In Times' was originally composed during the "Narcotica" sessions.

Without pretension, the duo Snøffeltøffs enriches Berlin's local scene by authentically bringing back the unconditionally guaranteed raw power and attitude of garage punk rock'n'roll. Having previously DJed and performed as a band in 8MM Bar, their very own selfproclaimed sound device "Lo-Fi, Hi-Fi - Shit-Fi-Garage!" expresses itself in a fuzzy and twirling two-man mayhem.

New Zealand moved into 8MM Bar in 2008 when Peter Mangan of the Sun And The Wolf joined the team. Having freshly relocated from Auckland, and subsequently joined by Dino Gollnick of Ladytron on Bass, the band released their excellent debut album "White Buffalo" in 2011. The track 'All We Need' was recorded specifically for this compilation, across the street from 8MM at the band’s studio.

Founded by Anton Newcombe in San Fransico in 1988, the psychedelic indierock legends The Brian Jonestown Massacre first visited Berlin and 8MM Bar in 2006. Shortly thereafter Anton quite literally moved in. Having constructed his own studio nearby, he records day and night when not touring, and actively supports the local music scene by regularly DJing at 8MM Musk Nights.

Venezuelan artist Gianfranco Pasqualin, a.k.a. Yanezi, of Mystical Communication Service moved to Berlin with his brother Gerald in 2009, and has ever since been an active presence in Berlins music scene, frequently DJing at 8MM. As a band, MCS have been relentlessly gigging their blend of "gypsy-blues" throughout Berlin, effortlessly adapting their sound to large venues as well as to tiny cafes.

Founded shortly after having met at an 8MM Musik Night at Bassy in 2010, the Berlin based quartet Suns Of Thyme quickly developed their own blend of psychedelic music propelled by motorik rhythms. 'Cataclysm' presents a taste of what’s to come with their debut LP, "Fortune, Shelter, Love and Cure".

The amazing Fredovitch (King Khan and the Shrines) moved to Berlin in 2009, and quickly became a permanent fixture, DJing regularly at 8MM and working at NEU! Bar. One of his most impressive projects, his One Man Band project in which he alone sings, plays guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and sequences, created the perfect closing track to this soundtrack, 'Welcome To Your Lands'. This version of the song was recorded with Fredovitch's Paris based band, Kitchenmen.

My First Time with Jay Reatard...... II/V

By King Khan
After hours of unsuccessful attempts Jay seemed fed up of searching and told us we could go to his mom’s and get some weed. So we showed up at her house at around 3 AM, sure enough his mom was awake watching TV and his little sister was sitting in the cutest mini lazy boy chair i had ever seen. His mother was so kind and invited us in and was thrilled to have some Canadians in her house. It felt so timeless like it could have been afterschool but it was actually 3 AM. His sister was adorable, she looked like a little Shirley Temple. At one point his step dad, poked his head out and basically looked just like what jay had described earlier as a real “pinhead.” We hung out and smoked some dope with his mom and then proceeded to Alicja’s house where he had just moved in.

When we got there he showed us some crazy analog organs and we had a little jam (this was all years before Lost Sounds). It was so amazing to see how into space sound he was already at that age. Carson passed out in the corner on a rug like the pigmonkey (a nickname his Japanese girlfriend gave him years later) that he is.

Jay and I stayed up till the wee hours of the morning and swapped tales about total debauchery. He told me about how he played a show in a mechanic’s garage where he got naked and dumped a can of motor oil over his head. He was literally slippin’ and a slidin’ everywhere and could hardly even play a note on his guitar. Then some douchebag rolled a spray can towards him. Jay didn’t even look at what was in the can, he just opened it up and sprayed it all over his balls.
